“Uncle” Bob loves to experiment by mixing models. His snapshot shows the canvas on the wall opposite his desk, currently with 3 types of sticky notes, each representing a different type of business model. He is an advanced user of “Business Model Generation”, and co-contributor for both “Business Model You” (see page 239) and “Business Models for Teams” (see Chapter 6).
He doesn't consult, coach, train, or advise careers. He markets SMBs in the USA to get the owner their highest value. To develop businesses for market he has started to offer an online business value building system to business owners. Here a business owner starts by self-assessing their value drivers online at no cost. If the results are interesting enough to get the business professionally valued, they can then begin to utilize online self-study tutorials and tools to build on strengths and mitigate weaknesses at no additional cost. Could this approach, designed for SMBs with multiple employees, have an application with solo practitioners?
Business Model Practitioners sometimes approach their practice as freelancers (trading their time for money) instead of as business owners (continually developing a business model to give themselves greater resilience and autonomy). Because of this, a business Value Builder program, the one online or the material in “Business Models for Teams”, appears to not fit their use because there is an assumption the model owner is working with multiple employees. A current model mixing experiment is to apply these multiple-employee based ideas to small practices by viewing vital Key Partners as Key Players in a “virtual” team who are treated as employees rather than external suppliers. The experiment has started with my own practice.
